William Simmonds Email: SmmndsSev@aol.com |
My family originated in Hanley Castle Worcestershire in the 1800s a brother of my great great great grand father travelled into Wales. I believe in 1911 my descendants arrived in Dolgellau; a William Simmonds and his wife Mary E Simmonds and their daughter Mary Beatrice. The address I am given is 7 Lion Street, Dolgellau. I wish to know does Lion Street still exist and is there a number 7? I suppose it is to much to hope a Simmonds still lives there? Any help at all would be most gratefully received. Len Simmond |

Family History - Humphreys/Jones Email: mick@ferris4746.fslife.co.uk |
I am trying to trace my husband's family. His grandmother was born in Dolgellau on 8th April, 1881. The name recorded on the short birth certificate that we have gives her name as Margaret Ellin Humphreys. However, her marriage certificate gives her name as Margaret Ellin Jones, father - John Jones. She went to London to work as a servant and married William Joyce on the 8th August 1907. Can any one help us with this? If so, please contact Michael Ferris |

Bronwen Myfanwy Email: marsh@adra.fsworld.co.uk |
I wonder if anyone would know about my grandmother Bronwen Myfanwy? born 1913 she had some connection to a butcher because before she died she passed a 2 oz brass weight on telling a story of taking it before being taken away by her father to the Liverpool area when her mother was no longer around. The fathers name was AUSTIN we believe to be from BALA. There was also talk of a Christmas day marriage which I believe to be her parents. Information on Mary Parry Jones Email: Martin@bisp.freeserve.co.uk |
I am hoping someone can help. I am trying to trace my family tree and know that my great grandmother died in dolgellau 30th November 1952 and is buried in a local churchyard. Unfortunately as I do not have a date of birth (although we believe it is either 1880 or 1881), I keep hitting the proverbial brick wall and hope this site can help. Her name was Mary Parry Jones and she lived in Caegwyn and was married to Henry Parry Jones. If anyone could help with any details, including the church or any local historians I could contact I would be extremely grateful. ...Catherine |

Famous Victorian Artists - |
I am researching a family of Victorian artists (the Williams family) who painted in the Mawddach Estuary area from around the 1850s to the 1880s. I am trying to locate where they might have stayed, which is a bit like trying to find a needle in a haystack, but worth a try. Apparently, Arthog Hall used to be a hotel way-way back and the Williams family certainly stayed in this area as well as in Dolgellau and who knows it might well have been here. My family of artists comprised of the father Edward Williams and six brothers three of whom changed their surnames to distinguish themselves from within the family and with other artists with the same family name. The Williams family brothers were: Edward Charles Williams; Henry John Williams, who painted under the name of Henry John Boddington; George Augustus Williams; Arthur Frederick Gilbert Williams, who painted under the name of Arthur Gilbert; Sidney Richard Percy Williams who painted under the name of Sidney Richard Percy and Arthur Walter Williams. There was also a third generation of the family that followed the six brothers as well. There is no doubt that the Mawddach was one of the brothers favourite areas for painting excursions and some of their work the most memorable of this wonderful area, particularly between 1850-1880. Are there any historians in the area who may have tracked down old hotel registers or other such material which might help me? Any help would be much appreciated. ...Michael |

Ellis Roberts (a Tailor) Email: klpm10@adelphia.net |
My Gr-Gr Grandfather, Ellis ROBERTS was born in Merionethshire, Dogelly. He married a Margaret Charles. I was wondering if anyone had any old photo's in the early 1800's. Ellis ROBERTs was a Tailor and his wife a Dressmaker. In 1851 he was age 30, so I was thinking perhaps he might of had his own tailor shop. Could you possible give me a clue or point me in the right direction to see if indeed a shop existed in which he was the owner. I have an address of Pwll Llan listed on the 1881 Census for him and his age as 60 then, occupation still that of a tailor. I would appreciate any help for this has become a brick wall for me. Lynn |

Search for Pugh at Llangelynnin? Email: kopugh@hemc.net |
I contributed my comments to your web site a year or so ago, and I note it is still displayed. I have reason to believe my ancestors are buried at the ancient church at Llangelynnin, but when I was there in 1995 time did not allow me to inspect the tomb stones. Many are very hard to read. Can you place me in contact with someone who may be willing to conduct a search for the names Pugh and Ap Hugh who died between 1690 and 1740? I am willing to pay for their time. I wonder if a list (audit, inventory) exists of those buried there, and if so, where the list may be reviewed. Kline Pugh |

1966 Penmaenpool Disaster Peter Watts: |
I wonder if anyone can give me any information about the ferry boat accident at Penmaenpool on 22 july 1966. The reason i ask this is because as a 14 year old boy I lost four members of my family on that day and as I wasn't on the boat trip, I have never really known how the accident came about. I have already been in contact with John Pugh who writes the Barmouth web site and he has been very helpfull. I wonder if there are any eyewitnesses still living in the Dolgellau area or people with memory's of that day. Yours, Peter Watts |

Ysgol y Gader 1956-61 Eddie Edmondson : |
I have been trying to get hold of a photo of the Grammar School (now Ysgol y Gader) which depicts it as it was when I attended, 1956-61. Does anyone have anything suitable?
I have attached, for interest, a copy of a photo of the school taken way back when, well before my time and before the classrooms that were there in my time were built. Eddie Marton (New Zealand) |

Family History Paul Crummay: |
I am currently researching family history and wonder if anyone has information regarding the Wootton family former proprietors of The Golden Lion Royal Hotel at the turn of the last century 1900. My father was born in 1917 in London to their daughter Gwendoline who was using the name Davies at that time. There is no mention of a father on his birth certificate. Details of Gwendoline Davies on the certificate state that she was formerly Wootton, of The Crundles, Barmouth, North Wales. The 1901 census gives the Wootton family connection to the hotel and that the family originally came from the Midlands area. Percy Edward Wootton being born in Birmingham, his wife Mary Cecile in Oswestry and Gwendoline in Sutton Coldfield. Any information on any detail above would be much appreciated. |

Family History Chris Jones Email: cjones@chapman.com |
I believe my grandparents and two children (not my father) are buried in Dolgellau. Is there anyone who might be interested in working with me on family history? The names of the folks from Dolgellau are: Richard (born 1847) and Alice Jones - children, Goronwy (died as infant) and Louisa (died about 1950). Hugh (born 1823) and Anne Jones - the census shows he was the innkeeper of the Cross Foxes - son Richard went to the US, but two daughters, Anne and Gwen, stayed in Wales. I have a portrait from about 1870 of one of the daughters - in the original painting, she is standing in the doorway of the inn, but it was cut down to a portrait. Thanks for any help you can give - hope to get there someday. |

| Dolgellay Railway Model |
In partnership with Gareth Jones, he and I are building a 7mm scale model of Dolgelley station as it was in the mid 1920's. Although we have so far been able to collect a number of published photographs of the station and its immediate environs, other photographs and information continue to elude our efforts. We are particularly looking for photographs of the rear of both station buildings, both early signal boxes, and any of the other buildings on site, such as the goods shed and the Dolgelley Farmers shed. Photographs and details of trains running about that time would too be an enourmous help. This request is really in the interests of accuracy, as we would like to make the model as accurate as possible to reflect what was once an important part of the area. Can anyone help us? We will be happy to re-imburse any out of pocket expenses incured and make available our researches to fill out those which may be ongoing elsewhere. Many thanks, Stephen Barnfield StephenBarnfield@aol.com |

Here is a photo of my Great Grandfather Cadwaladr Jones with the Eisteddfod chair he made for the Workers Eisteddfod of 1932 at Dolgellau. He lived at Llys Cadwen in Dolgellau. I would like to know where the chair is today and who won the chair in 1932. My Mother Mairwen Jones was born in Dolgellau although I was born at Machynlleth. I am now living at Motygido Farm, Llanarth having taught abroad for many years. There are a number of Welsh articles and stories on our website at www.attrill.freeserve.co.uk Email: rod@attrill.freeserve.co.uk |

Mike Bowyer email: mikebowyer@bigpond.com |
Mike would also like some help from anyone who knows a little of the local history. His questions are on this page, but here is a synopsis of them: Some sixty years ago when we lived in the valley below Precipice Walk on both Dol-y-clochydd Farm and Garygarw (the house at the swing bridge), my brother and I used to roam all over the area. During our rambles we often came across stone ruins of various types. One of these has stuck in my memory all these years as I have been puzzled about its origin...These ruins are located on the bank of the dry river bed, about forty five degrees across from the swing bridge. After crossing the bridge walk directly across the marian (as we used to call it) and cross the dry river bed. Turn up stream and walk approximately 150 to 200 yards. It is there partially obscured by brambles, that there are some low stone walls. From memory one is circular. As kids we were a little scared of this area as we often saw snakes among the ruins. It is highly probable that they were only grass snakes, but we never hung around long enough to find out. I subsequently read in some history papers forwarded to me by my brother that there may have been a smelter in the area and as there is an old copper mine not far away, this may well be the answer. Another point of interest is that old John Williams, the farmer at Dol-y-clochydd used to tell us an old folk yarn, that there was a tunnel from under the big stone fire place in the old barn which connected to the Lake on top of Precipice Walk on General Vaughns estate. Does the Grammar School has an Email address as I would like to trace some of my old classmates. One in particular a Kenneth Milburn does I am told return to the area on occasions. |

Does anyone know where Cwnwyd Mill is (or was)? I have an old postcard which I bought in the town and would like to know if it is local. (Click picture for a larger image) ANSWER: The mill you ask about I think is Cynwyd, not Cwnwyd. I was exploring and taking photos around there about 5 years ago when it looked as if someone was starting to renovate the place to make a dwelling. It's off the B4401 a couple of miles SW of Corwen, a short walk up a small valley leading up to SE. It's a great spot, with woods and waterfall so I hope the owners have restored the building & surroundings sympathetically. Andrew Currie |
