DOLGELLEY STATION

Dolgelley Station is 44 miles 36 chains from Llangollen Line Junction. It serves the town of Dolgelley and the villages of Glanllwydr, Llanelltyd, Bontddu, Llanfachraeth, Islawrdre with a population of about 3,500 It is a crossing station.

Prior to the absorption of the Cambrian Railway, Dolgelley was the last Station on the Great Western line, and the commencement of the Cambrian Company's line to Barmouth Junction.

Dolgelley, the county town of Merionethshire, is situated at the foot of Cader Idris. It is an ideal centre for some of the finest rock, wood, river, valley mid mountain scenery in North Wales, and as such is a popular place for visitors in summer. The Torrent walk, Precipice Walk and Glen of Arran are three of the principal scenic attractions. It is a tourist resort.

The station buildings which are of brick, comprise:

There is a Company's house at Dolgelley but it is not occupied by the Station Master.

Two Load Gauges are provided and there is a Cart weighbridge in the Goods Yard.

Horse and Cattle traffic is dealt with, the former at the Horse Landing and the latter at the Cattle Pens.

The Goods Warehouse in the Yard is 56 feet in length, the line passing through it, and the crane inside has a lifting capacity of 1 ton, There is also a large crane in the Mileage Yard. A corrugated iron shed has recently been put up in the Yard by the Farmers' Union from which they deliver goods to the surrounding farmers on the Co-operative principle.

The Signal Box is situated on the Down side of the line. Formerly there were two Signal Boxes at this place but all points and signals are now worked from one Box.

There is a Catch Point in the Up Loop worked from the Box and special instructions with regard to the working of it are shown on the footnotes.

Fouling Bars are provided at the Ruabon end of the Down Loop, and at the Barmouth end of the Up Loop.

Special instructions are in operation with regard to sending the "Train out of Section" signal owing to the position of the Signal Box which make it impracticable for the Signalman to see the Tail lamp.

The Station is lit by Gas, the charge for which is at the rate of 7/6d. per 1,000 cubic feet.

The traffic receipts for 1924 were:

During the summer period there is competition with road motor omnibuses, the Crosville Motor Bus Company running a service between Dolgelley and Bala, and also between Dolgelley and Barmouth. Great Western motor services are run on the following routes:

Dolgelley and Dinas Mawddwy,
Dolgelley, Tal-y-Llyn, Corris and Machynlleth
Dolgelley and Drwsynant

The principal traffics dealt with are general goods, timber and livestock. Parcels are collected and delivered but the.... (rest of line unreadable).

A Turntable is provided on the Down side of the line. It will only accommodate Class "A" engines.

Two Water Columns are provided, one at the Barmouth end of the Down Platform and the other at the Bala end of the Up platform.

The Engineer has considerable renewal work to do at Dolgelley and has been prepared to improve the existing arrangements at the Barmouth end of the Station, to remodel the Office accommodation, provide a footbridge and additional Cattle Pens. It is under consideration.
