Dolgellau Flooding in the Early 1980's
Courtesy of Phil Atkinson
Here are some photographs I took of the last flooding of the
Aran and Wnion rivers which I took on a visit to Dolgellau.
Although they are dramatic, they bear nothing to the flooding in the 1960's.
I remember accompanying my father to inspect the damage done to his shop,
now the Building Society in Bridge Street, formerly Siop Eames,
and finding three feet of water in the premises. A cold storage fridge,
measuring a capacity of 240 cubic feet was floating in the storage area.
The cellar of the Stag Inn was gutted and the water level in
Bridge Street must have been up to 4 feet deep.
There are markings on the side of the street indicating the maximum level.
Best wishes, Phil Atkinson
